Madelyn Smith

Dr. Madelyn (Mad) Smith (Kuipers), DVM, is a mentee in our ER Immerse Program and a passionate emergency veterinarian with a strong foundation in both science and compassionate care. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2025, after completing a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Goshen College. Dr. Smith is RECOVER BLS certified (2024) and Fear Free certified, reflecting her commitment to high-quality, low-stress patient care.

Dr. Smith’s path into veterinary medicine began after shadowing her rural general practice veterinarian following her freshman year of college. That experience sparked a desire to explore the field broadly, leading her to gain hands-on experience in small animal general practice and emergency medicine, dairy and herd production, and zoo and wildlife medicine. Across all settings, emergency cases consistently stood out as her favorite, motivating her to pursue every ER-focused opportunity available at Purdue. During her clinical year, she spent three months immersed in emergency medicine through on-campus emergency rotations and off-campus externships, solidifying her dedication to the fast-paced ER environment.

With eight years of experience in the veterinary field, Dr. Smith brings resilience, adaptability, and deep empathy to her work. Her own personal medical journey has shaped her into a thoughtful, compassionate clinician and a strong advocate for her patients’ health and well-being.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Smith shares her home with her two former research beagles, Scout and Goose. On the weekends, she enjoys crocheting everything from blankets to sweaters, working out, baking, and exploring new places with her dogs.
